The most common cause is a failing or undersized seawater circulation pump. Check for: reduced water flow from the overboard discharge, pump making unusual noise, impeller wear (rubber impellers should be replaced annually), clogged strainer basket, or a failed mechanical seal causing air leaks. Rubber impellers in raw water pumps (AC circulation, engine cooling, washdown) should be inspected every 6 months and replaced annually in Southwest Florida's warm waters. Running a pump dry for even 30 seconds can destroy a rubber impeller. Bronze impellers in centrifugal pumps (Scot, Oberdorfer) last much longer — typically 3-5 years — but should be inspected annually for wear and corrosion.
