What size stabilizer does my vessel need?

Stabilizer sizing depends on vessel displacement, beam, hull form, operating speed, available space, electrical or hydraulic capacity, and intended use. We review the vessel and the selected manufacturer's engineering requirements before recommending a system or retrofit path.

What's the difference between fin stabilizers and gyro stabilizers?

Fin stabilizers use underwater control surfaces to counter roll and may provide underway or zero-speed operation depending on the design. Gyro stabilizers use a rotating flywheel inside the vessel and require suitable structure, space, power, and cooling. The correct approach depends on the vessel and operating profile; the installed make and model determine our service scope.

Can you install stabilizers on an existing vessel?

Yes. A retrofit begins with vessel access, structural, displacement, power, hydraulic, and cooling requirements. Depending on the system, the project may include manufacturer engineering, naval-architecture review, fabrication, controls integration, commissioning, and sea trial.

How often should marine stabilizers be serviced?

Service intervals are set by the system manufacturer, operating hours, age, and condition. A planned inspection can include hydraulic fluid and filter condition, seals, anodes, hoses, linkages, cooling-water components, alarms, and control diagnostics. We confirm the applicable schedule from the installed make and model.

My gyro stabilizer is making noise or showing an over-temperature alarm. What should I do?

Shut down the equipment if the manufacturer directs it or if abnormal noise, heat, leakage, or vibration is present. Restricted cooling water, low coolant, pump or impeller faults, sensor issues, and internal wear are possible causes. Record the exact alarm, operating hours, and model before requesting service; do not assume a bearing failure from sound alone.

My stabilizer fins won't retract / deploy — is this an emergency?

Deployed fins that won't retract are a haulout risk — you can't safely trailer or travel in shallow water. Common causes: hydraulic pressure loss, actuator cylinder failure, control relay fault, or corroded limit switches. Call us immediately — we can often resolve this dockside with portable hydraulic equipment. Do NOT force the fins manually without proper support.

How do I know if my stabilizer system is failing?

Warning signs include: increased roll that the system used to handle, hydraulic fluid on the bilge or lazarette sole, unusual noises from the hydraulic pump, error codes on the control panel, slow fin response, overheating alarms (gyros), and visible fluid weeping at fin shaft seals. Any of these warrant immediate inspection — stabilizer failures at sea can be dangerous.
